Last week I had lunch with an old friend who in a few weeks will step down from her position as CEO at a rather large, privately held company. She has no set future plans at the moment and quite honestly I admire her clean slate. All things considered, of course.
“it’s been a minute since I sat down to think and write about leadership and my admiration for the quality.”
From this point forward, the world is hers.
But that’s not the point of this musing. The point is, we had lunch together and we talked about what we thought it meant to be a leader. We used words like, “fortitude” and “persistence.”
“Humility,” and “sacrifice.”
It was an emotional conversation. We talked about good times, not-so-good times, and times and decisions made in our careers and personal lives that maybe hurt, but challenged us to be better people. We talked about times that disrupted flow.
I told her I know she’ll be okay.
One of my all-time favorite motivational quips is:
“Move with no ego, have a sense of urgency, and give a shit.” I shared it with her. As far as I’m concerned, it is the key to happiness and success.
One of my former employers shared those words with me on my first day as a manager. He’d heard it from his boss (same company) on his first day as a manager, too.
Truth be told: any effort in life where all three characteristics were or can be applied, whether past, present, or future, will lead to happiness and success.
I thought she led well. She is a great leader. Sometimes it’s just time to move on.
